Charles enlisted in August 1862. His first battle was Antietam, and he fought at Fredericksburg. He was captured while on picket duty near Chancellorsville and was sent to prison in Richmond. He was exchanged, and then a mysterious series of events occurred, culminating in Charles deserting from Camp Parole, Maryland, in July 1863.
